Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a debilitating and often life-threatening medical condition. It is the most common type of sleep apnea. When a healthy person sleeps, the muscles of the upper part of the throat allow air to flow into the lungs. However, when a person with OSA falls asleep, these muscles are not able to keep the air passage open all the time. When the airway closes, breathing stops, oxygen levels fall, and sleep is disrupted in order to open the airway.
We perform a series of tests at the Cardiac and Vascular Sleep Lab to understand your personal sleep issues. You will have a narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea test done. We will check your central sleep apnea/cheyene-stockes respiration. Lastly our staff will do a multiple sleep latency test with a sleep diagnostic study.
The signs and symptoms of sleep apnea are different for everyone. Some of the more common symptoms include excessive sleepiness in the daytime. Or do you catch yourself waking up abruptly at night with shortness of breath? Has your spouse ever noticed you stopping your breathing while you are asleep. You may not experience all of these symptoms but having more than one may be a concern worth checking into.
There are health risks that come with sleep apnea beyond just being tired. Sleep disorders can not only disrupt your life, they can lead to serious medical risks including: high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes. It is estimated that 1 in every 5 adults has a sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and up to 80% are unaware of their condition and remain undiagnosed and untreated.
